AT HOME WITH TRINE KJÆR

AT HOME WITH TRINE Kjær April 22 - 2021 Words by Hannah Eklund The danish stylist and Creative Director Trine Kjær recently moved in to a new house in Charlottenlund, north of Copenhagen. We asked her about her new house, her interest about colour and where she find her daily inspiration.  "To me it’s really important to have a combination of old and new - that makes the interior personal and I feel the same with my wardrobe, always a mix of new and old pieces." The danish stylist and Creative Director  Trine Kjær recently moved in to a new house in Charlottenlund, north of Copenhagen. We asked her about her new house, her interest about colour and where she find her daily inspiration.  Tell us about your new House? We just got the keys to our new home in Charlottenlund - a city by the sea 8 km north from Copenhagen. It was love at first sight. It’s from 1918 and still have a lot of original details like wooden floors, stuccos and the most amazing terrazzo floors. Since the house is way bigger than our old apartment we’ve had to invest in some new furniture and mix them in with some of our old favorites.  Favorite place in Copenhagen? Frederiksberg City is my favorite area in Copenhagen. It reminds me a bit of my favorite city Paris because of the green trees, beautiful houses and cafées. Værnedamsvej is the go-to street for home interior, flowers, great coffee, soaps and cheese and wine. "I'm all about shapes and  materials when it comes to furniture." Where do you find inspiration? In these lockdown days I find most inspiration online - especially on pinterest and of course also instagram. I also love watching movies and series and look at the interior. For instance Wes Anderson movies and lately we watched Ratched on Netflix and there was some great lavish decor too. We love to travel to Italy and when I’m there I always find a lot of inspiration. I guess my style is a mix of Italian maximalism and Scandinavian minimalism. Trine Kjær on instagram "I FELL COMPLETELY IN LOVE WITH THE ORGANIC SHAPE OF THE PUDDLE TABLE. IT’S UNPREDICTABLE AND YET CLASSIC AND I ALWAYS HAVE A SOFT SPOT FOR OAK BECAUSE IT GETS PRETTIER AND PRETTIER AS THE YEARS GO BY." Your best tips to add more color in a home? Don’t be afraid of colors. Its a great way to make you home look a bit more personal and more fun. My best advice is to keep your furniture pretty clean, and then for instance paint your walls in colors - it’s easy to redo if you get tired of it - and find some colorful accessories like vases, rugs, pillows etc. If you’re more into white walls it looks great with just one furniture in a pop out color like red.

The range will consist of a curated selection of Massproductions’ best-selling products, with designs chosen by Massproductions’ founders Magnus Elebäck and Chris Martin as well as limited editions exclusive to massproductions.se. Pick your favourite from the new E-com collection Chris: I think it’s the blue fluffy Crown Armchair in the Raf Simons/Kvadrat fabric Silas. The moulded form is so precise and engineered, its nice to balance it out with a less distinctive fabric. "I like to make practical, functional furniture that is rational for production with a focus on the product rather than myself, all whilst trying not to be as boring as that sounds!" - Chris Martin, Designer in Chief Magnus: I would have to go with the BAM! Sofa. It’s got a strong sculptural expression and is extremely versatile at the same time. The sofa is super comfortable with the complimentary cushions filled with recycled down. On top of that, there is a lot of smartness thought into the product with its flat pack solution that not only benefits the customer but also the environment.  We never think about Massproductions as lifestyle brand, instead we’re always focusing on the object/piece of furniture itself. Our ambition is to add long lasting cultural values to the furniture industry and create pieces that you cherish and like to keep for a very long time.  - Magnus Elebäck, CO Founder Where did you find inspiration for the e-com collection? Magnus: We’re usually spoiled by having talented progressive architects from around the world to choose materials and finishes for our furniture. And now it was all up to us... In line with the idea of putting the object in focus the materials have been picked individually to represent each piece in the best possible way. I’d like to see this as a work in progress and a bit of a laboratory where we can stretch our offering, if only as a limited edition. Tell us something that no one know about you? Magnus: Really! Well ok. In my early twenties I went on a road trip around northern part of France. For many years after that I had this idea that at the age of 40 I would retire from design and become a Calvados maker in Normandy. That obviously didn’t happen, but as a matter of fact, I have stated some pretty successful (if I may say so) experiments,on a much smaller scale, from my country house north of Stockholm. But yeah, let’s keep that a secret, shall we. Chris: I am the 2004 World Champion Snow Sculptur.

LAUNCHING SERIF

Serif March 17 - 2021 Written by Sanna Fehrman  Massproductions presents “Serif”, an adaptable shell chair collection with a functional detail of solid wood which, like a serif on a letterform, finishes and defines the chair’s shape Massproductions presents “Serif”, an adaptable shell chair collection with a functional detail of solid wood which, like a serif on a letterform, finishes and defines the chair’s shape Massproductions’ design philosophy of slow, sustainable, and conscientious product development is embodied in Massproductions’ new product “Serif”. In the late 1990s, Chris Martin, head of design at Massproductions, conceived an idea which he felt could challenge the slightly restrictive typology that otherwise characterizes one of our most traditional furniture typologies – the shell chair. It was not until 20 years later that the idea was realized. Massproductions’ new chair has a seat of layered glued wood to which a solid wooden element, in oak or beech, is added to provide warmth and tactility. The detail also allows for functional handling, as shell chairs otherwise often slip out of the hand when lifted. "There are many versions of the shell chair already, but for a new version to feel meaningful, it needs to improve or add something new. I saw the potential in combining layer glued wood with solid wood. That idea has been with me for 23 years, but it has taken different forms over the years. In the end, I felt like I had explored all possibilities, any further change would impair the shape or its function. That’s when I realized we were ready to start developing Seriffor production" - Chris Martin, Designer in Chief “Everyone just thinks of plywood when you see a shell chair, it’s a material that has fallen further down the hierarchy than solid wood, which has a richer feel. So why not add a detail of solid wood to the shell chair and even better, why not make it a functional detail”, says Chris Martin. When the idea was to be put into production, Massproductions worked for three years with the development. Full-size 3D printed prototypes aided in developing a press tool that provided optimal comfort. The shape is based on the company’s popular and comfortable steel wire chair “Tio” and then further adjusted to fit the possibilities of layer glued wood. The broad Serif series can be combined with eight different bases and into a beam system, several of the bases are stackable. The chair is also available with armrests, several different wood finishes as well as upholstered versions.

Massproductions presents “BAM! by Axel Boman”, a creative sound experiment, where Swedish music producer Axel Boman explores Massproductions’ new sofa BAM!. The song BAM! (Massproductions Dub) is released today by Studio Barnhus. “Are there certain sounds associated with furniture? Our new sofa BAM! has clear pop art references and a kind of instant look with its block-like form. BAM! is also a loud noise, a sudden effect. In our tradition of inviting exciting Swedish music creators to meet the furniture world during Stockholm Design Week, we have now taken it one step further by asking Axel Boman tocreate music from an actual piece of furniture. Kind of.”, explains Magnus Elebäck, CEO of Massproductions. Towards the end of 2020, Massproductions sent a prototype of their new sofa to Axel’s studio. Hisassignment was to freely interpret the sofa into an audio production.    "All of a sudden there stood a cool, bright green BAM! sofa in the studio, which was anything but conservative and I let that inspire my process. Now we do something fun and new I thought! I wanted to challenge myself, take a few extra steps in a new direction and I knew I had the confidence to do this”, says Axel Boman." - Axel Boman One of Sweden’s most acclaimed jazz drummers, Konrad Agnas, from the jazz group Agnas Bros was contacted and a recording studio was booked. The song BAM! (Massproductions Dub), released today, is described by Axel as a balance between rhythmic and abstract elements. “The music plays with your expectations and is both beautiful and chaotic. A techno producer trying to make jazz? Live drums meet sequencers and synths with lots of dub effects, a tribute to all the music I love! I have listened a lot to krautrock, reggae and jazz as well as electronic music all my life, and I think it can be heard in the music?”, Axel Boman concludes. Listen to the track “Axel Boman – BAM! Bookends aren't just for holding books, they are like mini pieces of art with a history. They've been around since ancient times, made from all sorts of materials like stone, metal, and wood. When Massproductions' founder and design chief, Chris Martin, designed the Buffer bookend, he drew inspiration from the railway's "buffer stop," a device that halts trains at the end of the track. During the design process, Chris explored various materials before settling on powder-coated steel. "A stop sign. A parchment coloured ghost. A pretentious intellectual green. An unpredictable group of colours, that funny enough, enjoy each others company." - Magnus Elebäck BUFFER Designed by Chris Martin, 2023 Material: 20% recycled steel from Finland Measurement: 98mm x 120mm x 172mm Finishes: Warm red, Ivory, Blue Green "The idea of referencing a railway buffer for the design was a good starting point but I explored quite a few materials and shapes before I came to a pleasing solution, in the end 8mm steel plates gave the best weight, function and expression” - Chris Martin The bookend consists of three laser-cut steel plates made from 20% recycled steel from Finland. With a weight of over 1.7 kg and non-slip feet, the bookend stands firmly in the bookshelf. Buffer is available in Massproductions Red, Ivory and BlueGreen and adds a pop of colour to the end of any row of books. In the end, whether your bookends are classic and refined or quirky and fun they all share one thing in common: they bring a charm to your bookshelf! In this process Massproductions have initiated a collaboration with KTH (Royal Institute of Technology), to develop a tool for identifying the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of their furniture. Three aspects of the production process were identified as emission contributors: materials, electricity, and transport. The CO2 calculation is expected to be completed later this year, but will from now on be presented continuously throughout the year.
